On December 17th, 2016, National Institute of Technology, Kure College held the Global Understanding Workshop, “ASIA DAY”.

This workshop is held every year with the aim of that students deepen their understanding and interest of Asian culture. This year, about 40 students from four National Institute of Technology college (Kure, Ube, Tokuyama, and Oshima) in Chugoku district. From Ube Kosen, 2 of international students from Malaysia and 2 of regular course students joined the event.

First, the students were divided into 4 or 5 groups, and each group made Karuta (Japanese playing cards). They wrote a sentence something related to Asia on each reading card, and drew a picture on each face card that match the reading card with watercolor pencils.
One of the students from Malaysia chose the letter “る(ru)”. She wrote “Luffy is the most famous anime character in Asia” on the reading card, and drew a picture of Luffy of “ONE PIECE” on the face card. By the time Karuta was completed, the students in each group got friendly.

After that, an office staff of JICA explained JICA’s global cooperation with doing a quiz game of guessing which country it is. Also a person who graduated from Tsuyama Kosen and went to Senegal as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer gave a lecture to the students. He told that going overseas has a number of advantages, and it looks good on their resume for Kosen students in the science and engineering majors. He also said that they can find the job they like overseas.

Then, international students from each Kosen set up 5 country-specific booths, and the other students walked from booth to booth, 10 minutes each. They enjoyed Malaysian games, tried Thai tea, and enjoyed each country’s culture.

At the end of the workshop, all the students were divided into 4 groups and played Karuta they made at the beginning of the event as an icebreaker. The teachers joined the game as well and they all enjoyed playing it beyond nationalities or generations.

Mr. Hiroto Murata, the 3rd grade of the department of Chemical and Biological engineering

I didn’t have a chance to talk to international students from other Kosen, so I was very excited to see them. Making Karuta, a lecture from an office staff of JICA, booths, and playing Karuta, all events were interesting and the time just flew by. Thai food were very colorful, and I was surprised to know the colors were not artificially colored, but they were natural. I was able to know about Cambodia and Senegal which I didn’t care till now.
I was caught up in the lecture by an office staff of JICA. Also, the lecture by a person who graduated from Kosen and worked as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer was helpful for making a career choice. I’d love to attend this workshop again.
