Message from students

Mr. Kodai Fukushige (3rd year of Chemical and Biological Engineering)

I joined the Chinese training at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages for 2 weeks from August 26 to September 8. I was assigned as a leader for the group.
Our Chinese teacher was a graduate from department of applied Chinese and he was very friendly. We could not follow his high tension first, and were confused to his questions. But as we got used to his way, we started to response to him eagerly and it resulted that we had a good environment classroom. I also planned “Random seat changes” in the class to get to know each other better. I believe it was a great plan when I saw Japanese students from different Kosen or university were chatting together.
All of the Japanese students had an own tutor who was a student of department of applied Chinese. Tutors were with a Japanese students during the free time, and helped us for the final presentation. In the free time, they took us to some tourist areas and good restaurants near the university. So that we could enjoy the most in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, even though it was such a short time of 2 weeks. We received nice gifts from our tutors on the last day. It was such a surprise and it made us very happy. So we sent them a thank you letter and gave them small gifts. We were very happy to see them pleased.
At the end, I would like to express thank you to Prof. Hatamura and other teachers providing us such a great experiences, and thank you to teachers who taught us Chinese very well and for fun, also to our tutors who took care of us very well. Thank you.

Ms. Haruna Fukumitsu (2nd year of Chemical and Biological Engineering)

I took Chinese class at Wenzao Ursuline University. Chinese pronunciation was very difficult. But I learned some words and phrases for living and used them when I shopped. I managed to listen and speak of numbers! I wanted to learn more Chinese!
I met many people during the training. I used English when I talked to my tutor. We managed to make conversation with a little knowledge of English. I used Google translate when I was not sure how to say during the conversation. I was very disappointed with my English ability. I felt sad and frustrating when I could not say what I wanted.
What I thought the most important through this training was to talk to others cheerfully with smile. I could learn the language through communication by talking to others.

Ms. Ena Kidani (1st year of Chemical and Biological Engineering)

I learned how important “Communication” was by joining this training, and noticed I could connect with many people through communication.
It was my first time to study Chinese and the pronunciation was difficult. I increased the Chinese knowledge by using them many times, like using words I learned in the class and asking questions to my tutor. I thought the most important thing was to make opportunities by myself, not waiting for it. And I thought the communication was the one of the ways.
I also thought it was important that I should start to make conversation with my tutor to get closer, and make the conversation expand. I tried to talk to them even I made mistakes because I thought it was better than using translation app. Many Japanese were shy to speak in English because we did not have confident, but many Taiwanese expressed themselves with confident in Japanese. I thought they were cool.
I would like to study further based on what I learned this time. Also I would like to stay in touch with my Taiwanese tutor.
