On Friday, July 12, 2024, we held a Taiwan Study Abroad Exchange Meeting. Fourteen short-term Taiwanese exchange students currently studying at Ube National College of Technology and eighteen Japanese students planning to study in Taiwan this summer participated in the event. The meeting was facilitated by a Japanese student organizer and featured self-introductions by the Japanese participants, introductions and university presentations by the Taiwanese students, recreational activities, a Q&A session, and free discussions

The Japanese students expressed their hopes and aspirations for studying in Taiwan through their self-introductions in English, and received encouraging words of “Welcome to Taiwan” from the exchange students. The short-term Taiwanese students shared not only about their research activities at the university but also gave detailed descriptions of the local shops around campus and even the stray cats on campus, which greatly heightened everyone’s excitement and anticipation for their upcoming study abroad experience.

During the recreational activity, we held a “3-hints” quiz where participants gave each other clues based on topics created by the organizers. It was fascinating to see the different ways hints were crafted depending on the country; for example, for the topic “Taiwan,” the hint “hungry” immediately made all the Taiwanese students guess the answer correctly. The competition between groups made the event very lively and engaging.
During the Q&A session, some of the younger students felt a bit anxious, but with the support of experienced upperclassmen, they actively engaged with the exchange students. The atmosphere was lively throughout, with continuous conversation, making the event a great success.
