In March 2026, we conducted language training programs at the English Village (DGEV) of Yeungjin University in South Korea and at JOYFUL Language School on Cebu Island in the Philippines.
Students were dispatched to the English Village (DGEV) in South Korea as part of a joint program (March 9–23, 2026) involving the National Institutes of Technology in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions; 11 students from the National Institute of Technology, Ube College participated.
All students stayed at the DGEV dormitory, which features underfloor heating (ondol) to regulate room temperature, and were provided with three buffet-style meals daily. Classes ranged from small-group sessions tailored to students’ levels to “Situational English” lessons where students practiced conversational English in scenarios simulating various settings—restaurants, airplanes, homestays, drugstores, etc. These realistic settings were deeply appreciated by the students. Classes ran all day, and at the end of each day, a review session was held by native instructors. This training program, featured in multiple South Korean news outlets and newspapers, attracted significant local attention.

Additionally, two students from the National Institute of Technology, Ube College participated in a program organized by an external agency at the JOYFUL Language School on Cebu Island in the Philippines.
The training period was March 7–21, 2026. Every morning, students received one-on-one lessons from certified instructors, while the afternoons were devoted to special classes and discussion sessions. Classes were held on weekdays from 8:40 a.m. to 6:05 p.m., and a placement test and graduation ceremony were held during the final week. During the two-week training program, students went on excursions, such as island hopping and a trip to the SM Seaside, accompanied by staff. Accommodation was provided at an attached hotel with three meals a day, and two to three students shared a room.

Student Comments
Korea English Village – T
Time spent in Korea provided an opportunity to deeply reflect on “myself” and “Japan” beyond just language skills. Initially, I was fixated on speaking perfect English, but through classes on various professions and many presentations, I realized that what truly matters is not the skill, but the “will to communicate.” My inability to satisfactorily answer questions about Japanese culture by local students revealed to me my ignorance about my own country. Experiencing Korea’s vibrancy and the depth of its “jeong” (emotional bonds) enhanced my appreciation of Japan’s virtues—such as its politeness and modesty—from an “outsider’s perspective,” which was a major gain.
I intend to leverage the objectivity acquired via this program—that is, the ability to appreciate different cultures and respect individuality—to evolve into a global citizen, who is also keenly aware of his own culture and country.
JOYFUL Language School, Cebu, Philippines – U
I participated in this training program—an extremely meaningful and wonderful two weeks—to facilitate my personal growth. Every day exposed me to new experiences, and I was constantly inspired. On weekdays, we had one-on-one lessons, special classes, and discussion classes. Since it was an English training program, I expected the lessons to be the main focus—but the reality exceeded my expectations. I was immersed in English from morning till late evening, and the first day was especially tough. However, once I got used to it, it was not so bad, and I enjoyed the lessons.
On weekends, we went on city tours and participated in various activities. For example, we went shopping at the SM Seaside and went island hopping. Both were a lot of fun. The sea during island hopping was mesmerizing, and there were so many fish—it was an absolute blast. The food was also delicious. The mangoes, particularly, were incredibly juicy and rich. The rooftop bar at our hotel served delectable mango shakes and hamburgers. I would love to have them again.
This training program taught me the importance of taking on new challenges. I am sure this experience will stand me in good stead throughout my life. I am immensely grateful for this unforgettable experience.
