本校の外国人教員であるシティが、希望する学生を対象にオンライン英会話を始めました。
シティは昨年度、グローバルエンジニア事業の特命助教として採用され、低学年の数学や化学の授業に参加して英語で講義をしたり、国際交流活動に参加したりしています。母国のマレーシアでは政府系高校で物理と数学を教えており、2014年に来日しました。
新型コロナウイルスの影響により対面式の授業ができない状況のなか、本校では4月13日よりオンラインによる授業を開始しました。例年であれば、海外の協定校から英語や中国語の教育実習生が来て、学内で様々な国際交流活動が行われているはずだったのですが、前期の短期留学生受け入れはすべて中止となりました。そうしたなかでも国際交流活動を継続させようと、希望する学生に限定して、オンライン英会話「ニーハロ」を開始することになりました。
ニーハロは、学内の国際交流活動を企画・運営する学生ボランティアグループSA（Student Ambassador）が主催する国際交流活動の１つで、短期留学生が来校している期間、毎週放課後に行っている活動です。今回のシティとオンライン英会話も、SAの学生が立ち上げに関わりました。
現在参加しているのは３年生の１グループ３名と、１年生の１グループ３名です。４月末より各グループ毎週１～２回、office365のTeamsを使って、おすすめの本の紹介、好きな料理の紹介など、テーマを決めて英語でコミュニケーションを行っています。

講師がシティ１人だけなので、現在は試行的に実施している状況ですが、今後、毎年語学の教育実習生を派遣している台湾の協定校と相談しながら、本格的に、オンラインによる英語、中国語学習の機会を増やしていこうと計画しています。
こうした状況だからこそできる国際交流活動を行っていきたいと思います。準備ができ次第、お知らせします。

４月中旬から始まったオンデマンド授業には少しずつ慣れてきましたが、提出物がきちんと提出できているかなど心配も多くあります。そうしたなか、シティ先生との英会話「ニーハロ」は、英語に興味のある１年生３人が集まってやってもらっています。
入学式を終えてから学校に登校できたのは数日なので、３人とも学校で話したことは一度もありません。高専で初めての友だちとオンラインで、しかも英語でコミュニケーションを取るのは少し難しいですが、英語を学ぶとても良い機会だと感じて、楽しんでやっています。
Siti Aisyah
My name is Siti Aisyah. I was appointed as a specially assigned assistant professor for the Global Engineer Project. Before coming to Japan in 2014, I was a physics and mathematics teacher in a government high school in Malaysia. I obtained my Bachelor of Science (Physics) with Education from the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM). My passion is in education and sciences, and I like to learn and experience new things. In my free time, I like to read books and listening to music. I also like to travel and experience other country’s culture, learn their history and life-style.
Working in NITUC allows me to share my experience with the students and enabled me to get involved in educational activities that will have an impact on the students’ global skills. They should know that understanding English is invaluable for science. It allows people to study abroad or read scientific works directly after they have been written, using them in their studies, not when they are accessible in the local language. I am currently assisting teachers in NITUC in making learning material for Mathematics and Chemistry classes in English. My work involves reviewing the materials and improving the contents by aligning them with English-based text books and syllabus. Other than this I will gradually teaching students in classes from the next semester.
Currently, I am also handling English Cafe which started on May 2020. English Cafe is an excellent place to brush up students’ conversation skills in an enjoyable and relaxing environment. Rather than conventional English practice, we sharpen on English speaking through casual talk, daily life interests, and natural pronunciation. Students can speak freely and at their own pace on specific topics given each week, such as their favorite books, movies, or unforgettable life experience. I am very impressed with students’ motivation during our past few weeks, and they showed an outstanding effort to speak freely.
I utilized the Bloom Taxonomy structured model to classify the different objectives and skills for the students by considering the ability of the students. I also prefer to use a free facilitated model, where all domains of cognitive progression are cyclical. Teachers and learners have the autonomy to shift their methods at any point during the learning venture. These methods enable learning to manifest in a free dimensional mode incorporating the past learned studies and reflective analysis of new knowledge activity. Through this methodology, I found that the motivation of students increased since it is in a non-rigid flexible learning environment.
I am welcoming students to join us even to hang out or polish their English conversation skills at any time. We can also have tea or coffee, whether it is online or offline chat! We are looking forward to meeting you!
